"You've always had Bun B, Scarface and Andre 3000. For every New York rapper that's really lyrical, I can find you a Southern rapper that matches them. For every Southern rapper you say can't rap, I can find the equivalent in New York."-David Banner

Just posted this because I respect the quote.  David Banner has a great point.  Hip-hop "fans" are always trying to point fingers at the South and blame the South for the decline in hip-hop.  I argue that here in the South there is just as many great rappers as New York or anywhere else.  Guys like LL Cool J and Run DMC may have been "pioneers" to the rap game but that doesn't make them great rappers/lyricists or better than any of their later contemporaries.  I would further go on to argue that in the last 5-6 years majority of the popular rappers have come from the South: T.I., Lil' Wayne, Ludacris, Drake (his swag atleast), Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, J. Cole, Rick Ross etc.  After looking at these 7 rappers I just named thats damn near all of the popular rap industry.  So is the decline in hip-hop because the South is putting out music?  Or is it because other places just aren't.  If you ask me, the South has this rap shit on lock right now.  Period.

  1. Great quote. David Banner has always been on point with his observations in the rap community. New York rappers are just upset that the part of the country they've always deemed inferior when is comes to being a lyricist is holding the game hostage right now.

  2. This is probably the realest quote on rap music I've ever heard.
